Why is My Stucco Cracking? Cosmetic Curing vs. Structural Settlement

Stucco cracking is common, but it's not all the same. While hairline cracks are often cosmetic, deep diagonal or pattern cracks signal foundation settling or lath failure. We diagnose your cracks using non-destructive moisture scanners with $0 down on repairs.

Why Ignoring this Symptom Damages Your Home's Envelope

Stucco is designed to shed water and defend your home. However, it requires a fully functional base system: solid wire lath, clean drainage planes, and unblocked weep screeds at the foundation line.

When water seeps into plaster due to flashing failures or blocked drainage, the system becomes compromised. Over time, unaddressed moisture results in wood rot, crumbling cement, and rusted wire mesh.

Quick cosmetic fixes, such as painting or caulking over damaged areas without solving the water intrusion source, will only lock the moisture inside, accelerating dry rot and structural compromise.

๐Ÿšจ Warning Signs

Warning Sign Crack Patterns:

  • ๐Ÿšจ
Diagonal Corner CracksCracks radiating from window or door corners at a 45-degree angle, signaling structural stress or settling.
  • ๐Ÿšจ
Horizontal Lath CracksParallel horizontal cracks spaced every few inches, proving the metal wire lath is corroding and expanding.
  • ๐Ÿšจ
Cracks Wider Than 1/8 InchLarge gaps that permit wind-driven rain to flow directly behind the weather barrier.
  • ๐Ÿšจ
Bowing Along Crack LinesThe plaster walls on either side of the crack do not align flat, indicating structural movement.
Technical Standards

The Three Technical Levels of Remediation

We scan your walls using our non-destructive moisture scanner. Based on structural soundness, we apply the exact level of remediation needed, protecting your property value without unnecessary markups.

Level 1Cosmetic Hairline Cracks

Hairline Bridge

Cosmetic settlement cracks under 1/16 inch that only require surface cleaning, elastomeric crack bridging, and minor color coat touch-up.

Remediation Process:
  • โœ“Clean crack lines of dirt and loose debris.
  • โœ“Apply paintable elastomeric sealant.
  • โœ“Texture-blend the sealed line.
  • โœ“Apply color coat touch-up.
Level 2Deep isolated cracks

Mesh-Reinforced Patching

Wider cracks (up to 1/8 inch) that need minor plaster excavation, mesh reinforcing, high-performance bonding agent, and a fresh trowel coat.

Remediation Process:
  • โœ“V-groove the crack line to solid plaster.
  • โœ“Apply high-performance bonding agent.
  • โœ“Embed fiberglass mesh strip.
  • โœ“Trowel base coat and match texture.
Level 3Structural movement / lath fail

Lath Re-anchor & Rebuild

Severe cracking accompanied by bowing or detached lath, requiring localized rebuild down to the sheathing and structural framing adjustments.

Remediation Process:
  • โœ“Strip cracked stucco sections down to sheathing.
  • โœ“Inspect sheathing and framing for movement.
  • โœ“Re-anchor metal lath with code-compliant screws.
  • โœ“Apply full three-coat plaster patch.

โ€œWe got in contact with the Stucco Champions company after it rained we had water get into our garage and had no idea why. They found the problem right away. The weep screed at the bottom of our exterior stucco wall was damaged and needed replacing. They did the full weep screed installation and fixed the stucco damage around it. The texture blending was great and the finish matches perfectly. No more leaks since the repair.โ€

Common Questions

Common Questions

What causes stucco to crack?+

Stucco cracks are caused by foundation settling, wood framing shrinkage, thermal expansion, lack of expansion joints, or earthquakes. Coastal temperature variations also expand and contract plaster.

Is a hairline crack in stucco dangerous?+

Usually no. Hairline cracks (under 1/16 inch) are cosmetic and normal. However, they should still be sealed to prevent water intrusion over time.

Should I use standard concrete caulk on stucco cracks?+

No. Standard caulk shrinks and doesn't expand, leading to fast failure. We use highly elastic polyurethane sealants designed to move with the wall.
