Premium Santa Barbara Finish
Flat, Mirror-Smooth, and Unmistakably Modern.
Smooth stucco is the most requested exterior finish in Orange County's coastal and hillside neighborhoods. It delivers a clean, contemporary look — but only when the crew behind it knows exactly what they're doing.

The Santa Barbara Finish
A Finish With Nowhere to Hide.
Traditional stucco hides imperfections behind sand, dash, or lace texture. Smooth stucco has no texture at all. It's a flat, monolithic wall — every trowel stroke, every transition, every substrate flaw shows under raking sunlight. That's what makes it beautiful, and that's what makes it hard.
Most contractors shouldn't even offer smooth finish. It demands expert substrate prep, timed application, and a steel-troweled finish coat from a crew that has done hundreds of these. When it's done right, you get the clean, modern, almost-stone look that defines high-end Orange County architecture. When it's done wrong, you get a wavy, blotchy mess that has to be torn off and redone.

Important to Know
Smooth Stucco Can't Be Patched Invisibly.
If a single crack or impact damages a smooth stucco wall, localized patching will always show. There's no texture to mask the seam between old and new — so the patch will be visible forever, no matter how skilled the applicator.
The industry-standard repair is to re-stucco the entire wall plane, corner to corner, so the finish is uniform across the whole wall. That's why smooth stucco projects are priced by the wall, not by the square foot of damage. We'll walk you through exactly which walls need work during your free assessment.
The Process
Four Steps to a True Santa Barbara Finish.
Wall-Plane Assessment
We walk the property and identify every wall plane, transition, and penetration. Smooth stucco reveals substrate imperfections, so we map out any repairs needed before application begins.
Substrate & Base Coat
We re-prepare the underlying scratch and brown coats for flatness. Any high spots get ground down, low spots get filled. This is the step most contractors skip — and why their smooth jobs look wavy.
Finish Coat Application
A single team works each wall plane in one session so the finish cures uniformly. Our crew uses steel trowels and timed passes to lock in the mirror-flat surface that defines Santa Barbara finish.
Final Inspection & Sealing
Once cured, we inspect under raking light to catch any imperfections the eye would miss at noon. A proper sealer is applied to protect the finish and give it uniform color retention.

Common Questions
Smooth Stucco FAQs
What's the difference between smooth stucco and regular stucco?+
Regular stucco has a textured finish coat — sand, dash, lace, or Spanish lace — that hides imperfections in the underlying wall. Smooth stucco has no texture at all. It's a flat, monolithic surface often called 'Santa Barbara finish' or 'Mediterranean smooth.' Because there's no texture to mask flaws, smooth stucco requires a much higher level of substrate prep and applicator skill. It's the premium option and it shows.
Can you patch smooth stucco?+
Not invisibly. Any localized patch on a smooth wall will remain visible because there's no texture to hide the transition where old meets new. The industry-standard fix is to re-stucco the entire wall plane — from corner to corner — so the finish looks uniform. This is why smooth stucco repair projects are priced by the wall, not by the square foot of damage.
How much more does smooth stucco cost than textured?+
Smooth finishes typically carry around a 40% labor premium over textured stucco because of the extra substrate prep, the longer application time, and the narrower margin for error. The exact number depends on the size of the walls, the condition of the existing substrate, and whether scaffolding is needed. Every quote is fixed-price after a free on-site assessment.
Will smooth stucco crack over time?+
All stucco systems develop hairline cracks over the decades as the home settles and reacts to seismic movement. Smooth finishes show those cracks more than textured finishes do — which is why we embed a high-tensile fiberglass mesh reinforcement in the base coat on every smooth project. It acts as a structural skeleton that bridges minor movement and dramatically reduces surface cracking.
Can you convert my textured stucco to smooth?+
Yes. The existing textured finish gets scraped and smoothed, then a new base coat and finish coat are applied over the prepared substrate. It's a full re-stucco project, not a refresh — but the result is the same as if the house was originally built with smooth finish. Most of our smooth stucco projects are conversions from older textured exteriors.
How long does a smooth stucco project take?+
Most single-story homes are completed in 5 to 10 working days depending on weather and the number of wall planes. Two-story homes with scaffolding typically take 10 to 15 working days. We schedule around Santa Ana winds and major rain events so the finish cures properly.
