Our Stucco Process
Paper & Wire
This stucco system utilizes basic lath— asphalt-infused paper, self-furred 17-gauge wire, weep screed, corner aid, and plaster stop. Weep screed prevents moisture absorption, and paper safeguards the under-layment. The wire ensures secure cement integration, and corner aid and arch aid reinforce corners and edges. Together, these components form a robust framework for dependable stucco walls.
Scratch Coat
The scratch coat, the initial layer applied to the wall, is executed using a hawk, trowel, and scratcher. The cement is evenly spread at a 3/8-inch depth. Horizontal lines are then created with a scratcher to enhance adhesion for the subsequent coat (the brown coat). While this process demands patience, it is relatively straightforward, making it the simplest among all base/finish coat applications.
Brown Coat
The brown coat, succeeding the scratch coat, is applied using familiar techniques. In lieu of a scratcher, the process involves utilizing a specialized tool called a "darby." This instrument, resembling a three-foot-long trowel with dual handles, allows for precise control and even distribution of the cement. The darby ensures the brown coat achieves uniformity. This step contributes to the structural integrity.
Finish Coat
The ultimate phase is the finish or top coat, typically applied with a hawk and trowel, allowing for customization through various techniques, depending on the chosen finish. Stucco finishes commonly utilize two main materials: synthetic (or acrylic) stucco and traditional stucco.
